Amsterdam's ultimate street party, held in honour of the Dutch Queen. The Koninginnedag tradition began back in 1949 on April 30 when Juliana became the new Queen of the Netherlands. The date and tradition has since been maintained by the very considerate Queen Beatrix (as her own birthday falls in the chilly month of January).
As well as a huge range of activities and festivities throughout the city, including open air concerts, live DJs and children's events, between the hours 6.00 and 20.00, Amsterdammers can sell anything they like (within reason of course) on the streets of the city. This gives Koninginnedag its unique atmosphere. It's a bit like the world's biggest flea market meets the ultimate street celebration.
The canals of Amsterdam are heaving with boats of all shapes and sizes. On almost every corner, bands play to dancing passers-by. There is never a dull moment as every street is packed with householders emptying their attics and there are bargains aplenty to be had if you keep your eyes open.
Officially, the party begins the night before and goes on until about 10.00 pm the following evening!
We hope our photo gallery will give you a taste of what it was like on the day.
