From Jessica's collection: embroidered cushion, restored chaise lounge and chair We are prone to sitting, when we are not sleeping. So chairs end up in our lives as facts. There is a chair for just about every one, every occasion, every place. Modern chairs, antique chairs, personalized ones and sometimes a bit crazy. The chair is a sculptural object as well, one to be considered as it takes up and marks off space, including from the sitter’s point of view. Jessica Padt, is an upholsterer whose work has been featured in Elle Decoration, Résidence and Cosmopolitan, she specializes in restoring and reupholstering old chairs, couches and sofa’s. Her daily work mostly consists of reupholstering antique furniture and mid-century modern (1960s and 1970s) designer pieces, particularly vintage pieces by Artifort, a Dutch furniture company. But, while working, Jessica Padt never stops pursuing her own ideas. In her storefront workshop in the center of the northern Jordaan there is always something special to see. It’s a colourful place filled with special objects, from an ottoman with fake flies on it, a pair of wooden chairs covered with vines and birds, or objects that say chair but really mean something else. For example, from two iron bathtub feet, found on a fleamarket she created a fake fireplace, out of coloured material. It looks in a way like a footstool, but obviously isn’t. Designer fabric stockist including: Kvadrat, Christian Fischbacher, Bute, Élitis, Création Baumann a.o. Special projects can include anything from creating little thrones for children, to embroidered cushions, created from old embroidered images she finds on markets and in antique shops. If you are looking for a professional upholsterer who will add a personal touch to your piece of furniture (as in choice of colour, pattern or material) Jessica's workshop is the place to go.
